I’ve been working on my radio station for 5 years – ever since I was in Form 1 and I started taking physics at school.
It’s taken me a long time to get it organized. For the first two years we didn’t even have stima at home. So I was trying to work with a battery, which was very difficult.
And keeping my mum out of my cube was hard too – some how she still has no idea what I’m making in there. She thinks I’m reading books all the time or fixing broken radios for our neighbours, which makes me a little cash now and then.
One time I got given a broken TV from the neighbour when they got a colour set and they didn’t think their old TV could be repaired. I got a lot of the first parts of ShujaazFM from that TV and from other broken radios I got around. The rest of the parts I either made (like the aerial, which used to be my mum’s umbrella) or I bought in town with money I earned.
But on Saturday everything was finally finished when the Chief told me to fix the PA system for his baraza. The 200/= he gave me was enough to by that last micro-chip I needed to go on air!
Now if I tune things carefully I can hack into any FM station I like and borrow their frequency for a few minutes.
But not for long though – if I stay on air for too long they can find out where I am and come to close me down.
But till they do I’m gonna be ShujaazFM - the pirate hero of the airwaves!!!
OK, so I guess you heard, no?
That so-called youth group came around and told me to pay for “security”. And because it’s Christmas, they wanted double the normal amount.
But what’s worst is that my friends have joined up with them! Imagine, we spent 8 years together in Primary and 4 years together in Secondary. Then they come with their gang and demand money like they don’t know me!?
I’ve been wondering what to do with ShujaazFM now that it’s ready to broadcast and I think I’ve found the answer.
I’m going to look for jobs and ideas for those gang guys. I’m going to find things for them to do which can make a little cash and get guys started in a proper life and which are better than going around demanding money from innocent people.
So if you have any good ideas – or any questions about the ideas I’ve had so far – then text them to me on 3008, or leave a message for me here on the website. If your ideas are good enough I’ll call you up and interview you for the radio show.
